On Friday, March 18, 2016, the #ConTechTrio Episode 1.8 aired with @JamesMBenham @BIM2theBone and @ConAppGuru joined by special guest Sly Barisic from @FotoInMobile. Throughout the podcast the latest in construction tech news was discussed, including, but not limited to, Lidar, drone racing, virtual reality spheres, wearable pain relievers, and government BIM mandates. Special guest Sly Barisic of FotoIN also discussed his personal and professional journey into the construction industry and the manner in which his product can improve workflows through easy to use photo documentation.
Some notable tech news from the week included Sweep which is a portable scanning Lidar that got its start on Kickstarter. This portable scanner is easily affordable by the masses and is an ideal tool for construction companies that are looking to quickly dimension rooms. Skycatch also made headlines as they are days away from releasing their Flight Planner App that would enable users to prevent the collision of their drones on a construction site. (Early release sign up here.) Wearable tech continued to make headlines as many new products gained attention at SXSW last week. Quell is one of these products as it is a wearable pain reliever that uses tech for nerve stimulation. Quell is drug-free, has been approved by the FDA, and could be used by construction professionals to ease pain and body aches that come along with the job. The United Kingdom also made the news as on April 1st the region will be initiating a BIM 2016 mandate where every capital project will have BIM level 2 requirements and the Trio discussed how companies should prepare for further BIM mandates. The ConTechTrio also discussed a virtual reality sphere developed by Virtutecture, Bentley’s Reality Mesh, and the UK teen who recently took home $250,000 at the World Drone Racing Prix in Dubai. (For more details on all of the above be sure to listen to the full podcast!)
Sly Barisic @SlyFotoIN also joined the #ConTechTrio to discuss the latest developments in regards to his solution and how developments in photography technology are helping to improve photo documentation on construction projects. The many years Sly spent managing the stages of construction projects lead him to develop FotoIN to remedy the disjointed process of photo documentation on job sites. With FotoIN users can easily transfer pictures and accompanying data to a server which then routes them to the correct folder where those pictures are also easily searchable. In the future @SlyFotoIN hopes this improved photo documentation will lead to photo initiated workflows.
