Episode 1.6 of the #ConTechTrio podcast aired this past Friday where @JamesMBenham, Rob Mckinney @ConAppGuru, and Josh Bone @Bim2TheBone were joined by the Director of Field Technology for @JEDunn, Jake Bowron. Topics of conversation throughout this episode included the latest news in construction technology and an interview with Jake Bowron where he shared his passion for, and methods of, implementing tech on construction projects and especially for superintendents.
The first week of March was a big one for construction tech with DJI, Daqri, 3D printing, and of course virtual and augmented reality, all making headlines.
DJI, a well-known drone company, released the Phantom 4 with collision avoidance, image recognition, and more! The new technology that is implemented in the Phantom 4 is groundbreaking as this drone has the ability to “see” and automatically reroute around obstacles.
Daqri also announced last week their acquisition of 1066 Labs as the virtual reality company continues to adapt helmet and heads-up display hardware and software for use in the construction industry.
3D printing also made news as new developments offer the capability to 3D print a building and an SUV that essentially power each other. This could have interesting implications for vehicals and equipment on jobsites of the future.
In AR and VR news, McDonald’s and Coke-A-Cola both are implementing new virtual reality concepts to their packaging that transforms their containers into cardboard virtual reality goggles.
And finally, the #ConTechTrio discussed the viral crazy zipper truck as this innovative truck has the ability to dig tunnels by simply driving.
Jake Bowron from @JEDunn also joined the #ConTechTrio to discuss his role as Director of Field Technology, construction superintendents and how he is aiming to make their jobs easier through the implementation of technology. Jake began his career as a mechanical project manager before he moved to JE Dunn 11 years ago. Jake discussed the importance of IT in construction and strategies that companies can implement to change the culture around technology research and implementation. Jake emphasized the importance of working to increase the willingness of superintendents and other construction team members to transition to using technology and the methods of transition and adoption that he has seen as the most effective. As a technology enthusiast, Jake also brought attention to the tech that he and JE Dunn feel are the most beneficial on job sites.
