Episode 10, Season 1, of the #ConTechTrio Podcast aired on Friday where James Benham @jamesmbenham, Rob McKinney @conappguru and Josh Bone @bim2thebone were joined by special guest @GrahamLeslie from the @JBKnowledge Labs team to discuss the latest developments in construction technology news and laser scanning. @GrahamLeslie joined the #ConTechTrio to discuss how laser scanning and other technology is revolutionizing the construction industry.
The first week of April was a big one for construction tech news as Google, 3D printing, and augmented reality continued to make headlines. The Microsoft Surface Hub , a $22,000, 84 inch interactive computer, began shipping last week. This interactive computer is projected to transform office environments and lead a movement towards other computer companies creating similar devices. In addition, new Apple IOS 9.3 features were rolled out last week that included a password protected notes feature and the ability to change the blue light to a warm light in your phone to make night time use easier on the eyes.
Disruptive technology was also discussed as the construction industry is poised to be the next big market affected by leading tech companies such as Google, Apple, or Amazon. These tech giants seek industries that are not currently saturated with technology, implement their tech while there are no barriers to entry, and thus become market leaders in that realm. Autodesk continued to make headlines as the company is transforming the manner in which 3D printers are used with their new project to create a network of 3D printers that would make printing faster. MIT also made news as the institute has discovered a way to turn Wi-Fi Into Indoor GPS.
The BIM mandate that was mentioned in episode 8 of the #ConTechTrio Podcast, went into effect on April 1st and now a $21 Billion dollar project in London is being tracked completely using 3D BIM modeling. @FARO_HQ recently introduced the new Early Adopter Program, which gives customers early access to new products, and the world’s first 3D scan localizer. And of course, the FBI battle with Apple over cracking the iPhone made the news as the FBI was finally able to gain access to the iPhone.
The final segment of the podcast included an interview with Graham Leslie. Graham works in leads the Research and Development Team for @JBKnowledge and discussed his thoughts on the development of laser scanning along with his predictions of how construction tech will be revolutionized in the coming years. During the #ConTechTrio Podcast, Graham compares and elaborates on traditional laser scanners, non-laser scanners (systems that use infrared, etc.), and photogrammetry.
